The following story was written around 1920 by a young woman; her name was Loren Eiseley. I hope you find this story inspiring. It is a wonderful reminder that even though one person cannot solve all of the world's problems, one person can make a difference in at least one person's life and it can have a domino effect. Enjoy!
Along the sea shore in a far away land walked the wisest man in the entire country. He was aged, but very revered by everyone in the country. He had always provided extremely good advice and everyone listened to his words.
While walking along the beach early one morning, deep in thought about the perplexing problem of how to help his fellow countrymen, he came upon a young girl. The girl was standing near the water picking up star fish that had been washed up onto the sand. With the tide now out, they would all soon die. There were hundreds of them lying about.
The wise man asked her what she was doing. The young girl replied that she felt very badly for the dying star fish so she was trying to save as many as she could by picking them up and throwing them back into the water.
The very experienced and very wise man frowned as he felt sad for the little girl. He told her that what she was doing was a waste of time as she could not save very many of the star fish. There simply were too many. He went on to say that he was trying to solve a similar problem in saving people but there were just too many who needed saving. Helping one or two or three would not mean anything.
The little girl looked at the man, then bent down and picked up a star fish and threw it back into the ocean. She then told the old man that he was wrong, that it certainly meant something to that one!
What if the person you help today goes on to cure cancer, become a doctor, become a better parent, or a teacher, saves a life? The possibilities are endless.
